AIRPORTS COUNCIL INTERNATIONAL has published the provisional traffic figures for the world”s airports in 2003. If not pulling away from the rest, but easily established as the world”s busiest airport is Atlanta, home of Delta Air Lines, and moving just over 79m passengers last year, up 2.9%. Chicago O”Hare followed with 69m (+4.2%), Heathrow just holding on to third place with 63.5m and Tokyo”s Haneda, mainly domestic, just 300,000 passengers behind. In terms of cities if the four so-called London airports are added together (LGW, LHR, LTN & LCY) London is far ahead of the pack in terms of international gateways nearly twice that of any competitor. Last year FRA (48.3m), CDG (48.2) and AMS (40m) held level par with passenger numbers.
