Air Berlin has won a prestigious environmental award for its “Eco-efficient flying” programme.
Germany’s second largest carrier is the first airline to win the ÖkoGlobe 2011, an award given by the ÖkoGlobe Institute for pioneering innovations in sustainable mobility.
Previous winners include Deutsche Bahn, Toyota and Daimler.
The airline’s Eco-efficient flying programme was introduced in 2008 and covers a series of initiatives to save fuel and cut carbon emissions.
These measures include weight reduction which has saved 5,000 tonnes of fuel and constant renewal of its fleet.
Tim Haferl, Air Berlin’s corporate director flight operations, said: "Air Berlin is very proud to be awarded the ÖkoGlobe. This underlines the numerous efforts undertaken by Germany’s second largest airline for the purpose of making flying as environmentally compatible as possible."
