Air Asia is installing flatbed seats on a number of long-haul routes this summer, in its premium economy cabin.
The new seats, which are angled lie-flat, will be fitted on the airline's A330 and A340 aircraft, flying to Melbourne, Gold Coast, Perth, Taipei, Hangzhou, Tianjin, Chengdu, London, Mumbai and New Delhi.
AirAsia X CEO, Azran Osman-Rani said: "After reviewing the feedback from our guests we found the need for better and comfortable seats topped the list. As frequent flyers ourselves, we understand the great need for comfort especially for long-haul flights.
"We are happy to tell our guests that their wishes have been granted with the new flatbed premium seats, which add a new level of comfort to their flying experience''.
The new seats will launch on the London to Kuala Lumpur route in June. They will have a 20-inch width, a pitch of 60 inches and the bed will be 77 inches long when in a fully reclined position.
The seats will also have adjustable headrests, tray tables, reading lights, privacy screens and universal power sockets.
On the A330s, the number of premium economy seats will be reduced from 28 to 12, to make space for the new flatbed seats, while on the A340 the number of seats premium will be reduced from 30 to 18.
This will also mean more economy seats on these aircraft, increasing from 355 to 365 on the A330, and from 265 to 309 on the A340. Economy cabins will be denser, with the increase to nine seats across, one more than conventional carriers.
