Marriott International’s extended-stay brand Residence Inn is due to open it first property in London next month.
Residence Inn London - London Bridge will feature 87 suites with kitchens when it opens on July 20. It will be the brand’s second UK property after opening in Edinburgh in 2012.
The property, located in Long Lane in Southwark, is the refurbishment of a former Go Native apartment hotel and will also feature a gym, lounge and breakfast area as well as offering free wifi.
The opening will be quickly followed by Residence Inn’s second London property, Residence Inn London – Kensington, which is due to open in December and will feature 319 suites. It will be located in Warwick Road, near Earls Court.
The two London properties are part of a major European expansion which will see the number of Residence Inns more than double from three to seven by the end of 2017 – the brand will also open hotels in Aberdeen (October) and Amsterdam this year.
Diane Mayer, Residence Inn’s global brand manager, said that around one-third of all business travel was extended stay, which is defined as stays of five nights or more.
“This is even higher in Europe at 34 per cent,” she added. “In Europe, we have to definitely do more education about the brand as it’s a relatively new brand for Europe where there is very little branded extended-stay product.
“A lot of Marriott customers know the Residence Inn brand because we have been around for over 40 years. We also have people from the UK and Germany who travel to the US and know the Residence Inn brand.”
Mayer added that the brand would be continuing its global expansion over the next few years – Residence Inn hopes to add another eight properties in Europe by the end of 2019 as well as this year’s four openings, which will offer a total of around 600 rooms.
