Marriott International intends to lay off 673 workers, or
about 17 per cent of its corporate workforce, in October, the company confirmed
to the AP on Wednesday. The company currently has about 4,000 employees at its
Bethesda, Maryland headquarters. Bethesda Magazine first reported the news.
In March, the company announced furloughs and reduced work
schedules to begin in April, due to the negative effects of Covid-19 on the
travel industry, and at the end of May extended them through 2 October. The
company reported a second-quarter revenue per available room decline of 84.4
per cent year over year, coupled with a net loss of US$234 million. While
Marriott reported that Greater China had been leading the company's recovery,
CEO Arne Sorenson also noted during the second-quarter earnings call that some
corporate travel had begun to return.
