Marriott International has announced it plans to open 150 hotels by 2020 under its Moxy brand.
Moxy is Marriott’s economy brand aimed at the “budget-conscious” younger traveller.
The hotel group said it will open 2,700 hotel rooms in 11 Moxy properties in Europe by the end of 2016 with a goal of 150 properties and 25,000 rooms by 2020.
The European hotels due to open by the end of next year include:
- Munich airport
- Eschborn (close to Frankfurt airport)
- Frankfurt Gateway Gardens
- Aberdeen airport
- Berlin Ostbahnhof
- London Heathrow airport
- London Royal Docks
- London Stratford
- Oslo Exporama
- Copenhagen
- Essen
The announcement follows the opening of Moxy Milan Malpensa in Italy last year, as well as the brand entering the US market with eight properties due to open in New York, San Francisco, Seattle, New Orleans and Chicago.
“The launch of Moxy Milan was a defining moment for the brand; its first hotel in a gateway city that has met with widespread approval,” said Its continued expansion in the U.S will extend its appeal to new markets and help to establish it as a truly international brand”, said Amy McPherson, president and managing director of Marriott International, Europe.
“We expect that the next few years will show significant growth, helping to build brand presence so travellers can familiarise themselves with a new affordable design hotel concept,” she added.
In November last year Marriott announced free wifi to all of its rewards members, but only if they book through direct channels, a move described by travel buyer association ITM as “anti-corporate”.
