Hotel rates in London showed a steady increase in 2013, with the capital city now the second most expensive European city, according to research published by HRS.Average room rates in London rose by almost 4% in 2013 to £117.86, placing it behind Zurich which was the most expensive city in Europe, with average rates of €144.93. Moscow was third highest with room rates decreasing by almost 3% to €141.25 a night.The study found the second most expensive city in the UK for hotel room rates was Edinburgh, with an average rate of £94.90.City travellers found the cheapest European rates in Prague, this is despite a 4% increase to an average of €70 a night.The most expensive city globally for room rates was New York, which saw an increase of 9% in 2013 to £155.29 a night, the study showed. This was followed by Rio de Janeiro (£148) and Sydney (£144).The study also found that globally hotel room rates decreased in around two-thirds of international cities. Tokyo saw a decrease of 19%, with an average room rate of £111. Mumbai, Shanghai and Buenos Aires also saw a large decrease of 10%.
