CUBA visitors should make sure that the ”mighty dollar” is not the currency they intend to pay their way with on the island. Since last week the US currency has been banned as legitimate tender in Fidel Castro”s fiefdom. Every organization that currently accepts US dollars in cash can only accept Cuban pesos. The new measure will impact both locals and foreigners alike and it includes payments for hotels, restaurants, bars, taxis, shops, car rentals and other services that currently accept as the norm the US dollar. Tourism minister Manuel Marrero said that the decision would not affect the sector with 75% of visitors coming from Canada and Europe. In a press conference at the National Hotel of Cuba he pointed out that Canadians represent 28% of the tourists that the country receives, European countries 40% with the UK a 7% of the grand total.
