UNITED STATES new border controls seem to be working OK since the introduction of new rules on 26 October. The procedure has not changed much with normal leisure travellers completing the ”Green” form which is normally part of the aircraft”s cabin kit. At the control a finger print is now taken of each index finger and a portrait photograph taking seconds. It hardly adds to the normally fairly slow process that is US immigration. The current UK passport is machine readable but Department of Homeland Under Secretary Asa Hutchinson made it clear when speaking in London recently that travellers will be allowed into the US and not turned back simply because there is non-compliance with the machine-readable passport requirement. Hutchinson says immigration officers will offer non-compliant travellers a one-time exemption from the requirement and admit them to the US. This is also true for journalists and others who really should have an ”I” Visa allowing them to work in the US.
