SAMSONITE, now 95 years old, has come up with a new range of products to overcome the latest security ”innovation”. It may not be largely known to British travellers bound for the US but Department of Homeland Security agents can now force open your suitcase when it is in baggage handling and is locked. In any event one in ten pieces of luggage gets searched. The new Samsonite F”Lite collection of hardsided suitcases comes with a cleverly thought out lock that is virtually impossible to open accidentally, but easy to undo when needed. It is just one of a huge range of travel goods that the American company is presently introducing this side of the water. And there is more good news for UK travellers too. The Montreal Convention has been ratified by EU members establishing a maximum compensation amount of about ”850 per passenger, and replaces the current system of payments related to the weight of baggage which often hardly covered the cost of the case let alone the goods.
