MARITIME AND COASTGUARD AGENCY (MCA) aircraft co-ordinated an air sea rescue operation last Friday near the Shiant Islands, which lie south east of Lewis, part of the Scottish Western Isles. At 0615 a 36” fishing vessel named ”Seeker” called Mayday saying that the vessel was taking water and sinking. There was just one person on board. The Coastguard scrambled a helicopter and the Stornoway lifeboat was launched. Also in the area was the Air Atlantique Cessna 405 MCA counter pollution aircraft which located a person in the water within six minutes and directed the helicopter to the scene. The Western Isles Hospital reports that (even in July) the casualty was extremely hypothermic.
