JOURNALISTS visiting the United States should take care. With regard to visas, UK passport holders are still eligible to travel under the visa waiver programme, the green form, (90 days entry for business or tourism) as long as the passport has more than 90 days until it expires. The US Embassy says that working journalists are allowed to enter the country without a visa providing they have a return ticket and meet the 90 day rule. However the Department of Homeland Security has different ideas and states on the form that for journalists it is no-go. When you actually get to immigration some officials will stop you and some will not bother. If you are stopped it is off to an interrogation room, where, if you are lucky, a more open-minded officer interprets the rules so that you can come in. And then tells you off the record that it is all daft. After all this is the country of free speech.
