”Smoking is strictly prohibited in all railway carriages and at all railway stations. This is an excellent rule, and no gentlemen of good breeding and of correct taste will ever attempt to infringe it. The fumes of tobacco soon fill the limited area of a carriage, add to the impurity of the air, already despoiled, and in many instances have caused persons to be seized with violent illness”.
From the April 1859 edition of the ABC Railway Guide, now the OAG Railway Guide and one of the world”s longest running monthly publications.
