Now it is well known that Atlanta has overtaken Chicago O'Hare as the world's busiest passenger airport. The five terminals are connected by a fine underground system and although luggage is not allowed on board, it does find its way to the landside arrivals area.
The world record?
For walking.
Terminal E, the international terminal, has no travelators. You arrive in the central concourse which has two wings. It must be well over a quarter mile march to the furthest departure gate once you are in the building. And don't get excited if yours is E1. That is the furthest.
The only good news is that Atlanta International Airport Terminal E does supply a pianist. He serenades customers at the intersection/food hall, particularly useful in calming passengers who have gone off in the wrong direction.
The previous world record holder?
ABTN believes it is the Irish gates at Heathrow Terminal I way back across the road to the central area. No doubt Star Alliance members are arguing amongst themselves who takes over this section.
In the meantime if any ABTN reader knows of an airport with more than a quarter mile hike to the gate please let us know at [email protected]. We don't count moving walkways. And yes we know about Dubai.
