EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT members have put themselves on a direct collision course with the US by asking the EU Court of Justice to reject the recent EU-US treaty that would allow authorities to collect passenger name record (PNRs ” the passenger list in effect) to help combat terrorism. President Pat Cox, on behalf of the Parliament, alleges concerns over what he calls citizens ”fundamental rights and freedoms” but on a more practical level EU governments, backed by their own airlines are quite happy with the arrangement approved by the EU. In fact the Parliament has no real teeth and the whole thing looks like a political move.
