Summer of big contract wins
Glasgow has won contracts to stage a series of international conferences over the next six years worth £12.5m to the city.
The Glasgow City Marketing Bureau (GCMB) said today (September 2) that over the summer months it had confirmed 15 conferences that would be coming to the Scottish city.
Among them are events for dentists, a medical association likely to attract 3,000 delegates, librarians, sign language interpreters and statisticians.
The city is also due to stage the Commonwealth Games in 2014.
In the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) rankings for 2008, Glasgow was first in the UK and 33rd worldwide for attracting international association delegates with more than 20,000 visiting the city in that year.
Molly Doheny, head of the Convention Bureau at GCMB, said: "Glasgow has had an extremely successful summer of new international conference wins.

"The market is hugely competitive at the moment, but these wins demonstrate that conference organisers are giving a big vote of confidence to Glasgow."
Ben Goedegebuure, sales director at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC) where the events will be held, said: "It's great to see how coming together to bring business to the city pays off.
"The significant number of conferences won recently is a testament to our ‘Team Glasgow' approach.
"Instead of our city venues and partners competing against each other to win business, we all recognise and understand the merits of working together to create a united front."
