The UK government has said it will re-instate quarantine
requirements for travellers arriving from mainland Portugal – minus the Azores
and Madeira – and Hungary from 0400 on Saturday, 12 September, while Sweden will be added to
the list of safe travel corridors.
Transport secretary Grant Shapps said on Twitter that the
data from Portugal and Hungary, along with French Polynesia and Reunion, show
coronavirus cases are rising and it is necessary to require travellers to
self-isolate for 14 days on their return to the UK.
However, the rule will not apply to those returning directly
from the Azores or Madeira thanks to the new regional travel corridors policy
announced earlier this week.
Meanwhile, travellers returning from Sweden will no longer
need to go into quarantine following a drop in cases in the country.
