Emissions data specialist Squake has become the latest travel technology firm to join the Travalyst coalition in a move designed to improve how the industry measures emissions from rail travel.
Berlin-based carbon platform Squake joins the likes of Amadeus, BCD Travel, Booking.com, Mastercard, Sabre, Travelport and Visa, as a member of Travalyst, which was set up in 2019 by Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, to provide “trusted” travel data as a way of making the sector more sustainable.
Squake said in a statement that the move would help to improve how CO2 for rail travel is “measured, trusted and scaled” across the travel industry, through its rail emissions calculation methodology, which has been developed over the past three years.
Philipp von Lamezan, CEO of SQUAKE, said: “Joining the Travalyst Coalition is a proud moment for us. Our mission has always been to make sustainable solutions accessible, scalable, and genuinely impactful.
“Contributing our rail methodology and technology infrastructure is one step in building the shared infrastructure that will help the entire industry move faster and more confidently toward its climate ambition.”
Julie Cheetham, CEO of Travalyst, said the addition of Squake to the coalition would “accelerate meaningful progress for the sector”, and build on the progress already made in measuring emissions from aviation, through the Travel Impact Model (TIM), and in the accommodation sector.
“The collaboration marks the next station stop on the journey as we develop, incorporate and scale Squake’s rail emissions methodology through our Data Hub,” she added.
