US Airways is planning to launch flights from Philadelphia to Edinburgh from May 2014.
The carrier, which is due to complete its merger with American Airlines next month, will run daily flights to the Scottish capital between May 23 and October 1 next year.
The move is another boost for Edinburgh which is already set to benefit from a new service with United from Chicago which is also due to start in May 2014.
The new Edinburgh-Philadelphia flights, which are likely to operate under the banner of the new enlarged American Airlines, will use a Boeing 757 featuring 176 seats in two classes.
Andrew Nocella, US Airways’ senior vice president, marketing and planning, said: “US Airways’ new non-stop service will offer travellers from both sides of the Atlantic ocean a direct connection between the unique, historic cities of Edinburgh and Philadelphia.
“This is our first opportunity to serve Scotland’s capital from our Philadelphia gateway, and we look forward to strengthening our ability to help customers explore the British Isles.”
The flight from Edinburgh will leave at 10.50 for arrival in Philadelphia at 13.35. The return flight departs at 20.50 for arrival in Edinburgh at 08.40 the following day.
US Airways already flies from Philadelphia to Heathrow, Manchester, Glasgow, Dublin and Shannon.
Scottish transport minister Keith Brown added: “The announcement of a new link between Edinburgh and Philadelphia is more great news for Scotland’s aviation sector.
“Not only does it bolster Scotland’s economy by supporting tourism, trade and investment, it also helps to strengthen our enduring relationship with the United States.”
