Heathrow airport has confirmed Paul Deighton will succeed Nigel Rudd as chairman of the board when he steps down later this year.
The appointment comes as Heathrow battles Gatwick to increase airport expansion in the south east.
Deighton is a former investment banker at Goldman Sachs and was chief executive of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games. He then became commercial secretary to the Treasury.
Deighton said: “I'm delighted to be joining a team with an ambition to give passengers the best airport service in the world and focussed on delivering the runway that will keep Britain at the heart of the global economy."
