Gatwick airport has apologised to passengers who had to wait up to five hours in reclaiming their luggage on Saturday (July 26), due to staff shortages among baggage handlers.
Some passengers arriving at Gatwick’s south terminal were told to go home and wait for their luggage to be delivered.
The delays were caused by "resourcing issues" involving baggage handlers’ firm Swissport.
"Due to resourcing issues with the baggage handlers Swissport tonight, there have been issues and delays with passengers' luggage," a Gatwick spokesperson said.
"Gatwick has provided extra staff to help the airlines and their baggage handlers improve their service, as well as providing welfare and water for passengers waiting in the baggage areas, but we are sorry for the delays they have faced."
Earlier this month (July 15) Gatwick also told passengers to expect long delays when collecting baggage due to staff shortages at Swissport.
