Following the earthquake on the morning of February 27, the majority of flights to the capital of Chile have been suspended.
A statement on Santiago airport's website said there are "restricted operations". Passengers should communicate directly with their respective airline and not come to the airport unless "strictly necessary".
LAN, Chile's national airline, said: "We are still undergoing joint efforts with the Ministry of Public Works, the Civil Aeronautics Administration of Chile and the terminal concessionary in Santiago in order to resume airport operations as soon as possible."
LAN is now operating a restricted number of flights and is helping to set up a makeshift terminal.
Ignacio Cueto, general manager of LAN, said: “The situation is far from normal. We are working towards reinstalling a mere 15% of domestic and international operations.”
No tickets can be bought on any flights within Chile or for international flights to and from Santiago, the airline's main hub, until March 7.
LAN said the priority until Thursday would be transferring passengers that have been affected by flight cancellations to and from Santiago.
Between now and Thursday (March 4), a number of passenger lists have been changed. Passengers booked onto one of these flights, listed here on www.lan.com, need to ring the airline to be reticketed.
A number of flights, again listed on the website, are running as usual, but the airline has requested passengers to arrive at the airport three hours in advance for international flights, and two hours for domestic departures.
"All passengers will he boarded, and we ask for a little bit of patience, since operations will increase gradually," said LAN. The airline said it hopes operations will return to normal by Friday. The UK helpline for LAN passengers is 0800 977 6100.
All other LAN operations (domestic flights within Peru, Argentina, Ecuador and international flights that don't depart or arrive in Santiago) continue to operate as normal.
Air France flights to Santiago, with connections from London via Paris, are suspended until March 4 at the earliest.
Air Canada has suspended flights to Santiago until further notice, while American Airlines is offering passengers due to travel before March 6 the opportunity to change their travel plans at no extra charge, and Delta is offering the same for passengers due to travel between now and March 8.
