The owner of Doncaster Sheffield airport will consider “all options” to keep the UK gateway open as its future undergoes a strategic review.
The airport, which is owned by the Peel Group, suffered a major blow when Wizz Air decided to withdraw its flights in June, leading Doncaster Sheffield’s board to warn that retaining the airport “may no longer be commercially viable”.
Tour operator Tui is now the only airline to use the facility, which was formerly known as Robin Hood airport, as a base.
Doncaster Council said that the Peel Group had made it clear during meetings that it would “look at all options to keep the airport open”.
“They would be willing to consider a range of options that could result in the maintenance of aviation operations on the site,” added Doncaster mayor Ros Jones and South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority mayor Oliver Coppard in a joint statement.
The mayors added that various options for the airport's future were now being investigated and the “urgency of this work cannot be underestimated”.
“We are now working closely with the Department for Transport and have jointly commissioned an economic impact assessment, alongside our private sector partners, to inform the best possible outcome for Doncaster Sheffield airport, Doncaster and South Yorkshire,” they added.
Local authorities said they would continue to work with Peel Group to ensure that the airport can continue as a viable aviation operation and remain open.
