British Airways’ parent company IAG is to cut 1,581 jobs at its struggling Spanish carrier Iberia, as it plans a return to profit.
The job losses will be voluntary and are in addition to the 3,100 already announced.
IAG said in a statement that voluntary redundancies had been one of the options discussed during previous negotiations on salaries and working conditions.
"Iberia has today informed its employees and trade unions that it intends to start a consultation period for a collective redundancy process which will involve up to 1,581 jobs," IAG said in a statement.
In May Iberia announced it halved its losses from €202 million for the first quarter of 2013 to €111 million.
