Air France-KLM and Etihad Airways have signed a memorandum of understanding to expand their existing partnership, including a broader codeshare and interline agreement as well as possible terminal co-location and loyalty programme reciprocity, the carriers announced on Thursday.
An expansion of the partnership would require regulatory approvals, according to the carriers.
The carriers in a statement said they "contemplate expanding their codeshare and interline agreements," and on Thursday have made 40 destinations throughout Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa available for booking. The carriers first signed a codeshare deal in 2012.
Additionally, the carriers also proposed the possibility of allowing travellers to earn and redeem miles on the loyalty programmes of each Air France, KLM and Etihad.
The carriers also cited the possibility of airport lounge reciprocity and terminal co-location, without further detail.
Air France in July announced it would begin a direct daily service on 29 October between Abu Dhabi International Airport and Paris Charles De Gaulle Airport.
