The German government has announced a €600 million package of financial support for the 15 most important airports in the country.
The package includes €400 million of equity, grants and loans in 2020 and 2021 for Berlin-Brandenburg, Cologne / Bonn and Munich airports.
The government will also reimburse up to €200 million of costs for keeping airports open at the beginning of the pandemic. The eligible airports are Bremen, Dresden, Düsseldorf, Erfurt, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Hanover, Leipzig, Münster / Osnabrück, Nuremberg, Saarbrücken and Stuttgart.
The funding will be available subject to states providing matched funding and that the airports have not paid bonuses to management or board members.
The government will also support small airports in connection with air navigation services and for air traffic control infrastructure.
Federal minister Andreas Scheuer said, “After intensive negotiations, yesterday we put together a comprehensive package of measures: The federal government will support the 15 most important German airports with a total of more than 600 million euros.
"Our airports were and are hard hit by the corona pandemic. The beginning of the pandemic also showed how much we depend on well-functioning air traffic. Maintaining this infrastructure is in the social interest.”
At the end of January, the UK government announced support of up to £8 million for each airport.
