Virgin Hotels has announced plans to open its first European property in Edinburgh in 2020.
The hotel will be located within the India Buildings on Victoria Street in the city’s Old Town, which will undergo redevelopment works. It will feature 225 rooms and suites, multiple food and drink outlets – including the brand’s flagship Commons Club – as well as numerous meeting spaces.
Gavin Barrie, housing and economy convener with the City of Edinburgh Council, said estimates show the hotel could provide a £5 million boost to the local economy.
Sir Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin Group, commented: “Edinburgh is such an iconic city and we’re thrilled to be able to say it will be the home of the first Virgin Hotel in the UK and across Europe.”
Virgin Hotels says the Edinburgh property is expected to be joined by an expanding portfolio of European hotels in the coming years.
