London has become Europe’s most expensive capital to stay in, with average rooms rates reaching nearly £116 a night.
The study, published by hotel booking firm HRS, has found the UK capital moved ahead of 2013’s most expensive cities Zurich and Moscow, which both have average room rates of £111 for the first quarter of 2014.
Compared to the HRS study for the first quarter of 2013, London rates increased 13 per cent while Moscow dropped 7 per cent and Zurich 2 per cent.
The study showed Edinburgh is the second most expensive city in the UK (£89), with the city seeing a significant increase of almost 12 per cent in average room rates against Q1 2013. The cheapest room can be found in Liverpool which saw a decrease in room rates of nearly 5 per cent to an average of £69 a night.
The HRS study showed the cheapest cities in Europe were in Budapest with average room rates of €66 – followed by Prague, Warsaw and Lisbon.
After London the largest increase in room rates was seen in Athens (€81), Warsaw (€76) and Milan (€108), where the room rates increased by 14 per cent for the Greek capital, and around 11 per cent for the other two capitals.
Globally Sydney topped the list as most expensive city for hotel stays with an average of £143 a night, despite an increase of 12 per cent on the same period last year.
