Cordis set to be largest hotel in New Zealand

By Molly Dyson / 11 February 2018 / Contact Reporter
Business Travel News on X

Following a multi-million dollar refurbishment of the Cordis hotel in Auckland, New Zealand, Hong Kong-based Langham Hospitality Group plans to expand the property and make it the largest in the country.

Upon completion of the expansion – set for late 2020 – the hotel will feature a total of 650 rooms and suites, as well as new and extended event space.

The new tower adjacent to the existing hotel will house an additional 250 rooms and suites starting from 32 square metres, as well as the new Club Lounge, which will feature panoramic views of the harbour and Auckland Tower.

The hotel currently offers event space in excess of 2,000 square metres, including the Great Room, which is one of New Zealand’s largest pillar-less ballrooms. Langham plans to add a new space of approximately 400 square metres that will offer natural light and multiple configurations.

Eight restaurant, the hotel’s award-winning eatery, will add an additional 60 seats and improved interactive food display areas. The new tower will feature a destination bar with a courtyard and outdoor seating for dining experiences.

The new tower is expected to open in the fourth quarter of 2020 in time for the America’s Cup and Asia Pacific Economic Forum (APEC), which will take place in Auckland the following year.

Simon Manning, chief sales and marketing officer of Langham Hospitality Group, said: “The successful repositioning of Cordis, Auckland combined with the economic growth and positive tourism outlook in New Zealand makes us confident that this is the right time for the owner of the hotel to commit its financial resources for the expansion of the hotel.

“On a broader outlook, with New Zealand’s International Convention Centre scheduled to open in 2020, Cordis, Auckland’s enhanced facilities and increased inventory will be in a strong position to support the country’s development of the robust conventions and events sector. In addition, Langham Hospitality Group is very much committed to New Zealand and is in active discussions to manage other hotels in Auckland.”
