CENTRAL AMERICA is active in trying to attract more airlines into the region. A total of just below 75,000 tourists from the UK visited the area last year, which is formed of seven countries, Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama. The brother organisation, Centroamerica Tourist Promotion Agency, notes that nearly 5m tourists visited the region during 2004, with more than 20% originating from European nation countries. Presently, only Costa Rica, Guatemala and Panama have direct connections, all through Madrid, but with most destinations within non-stop range of typically Airbus A330, there is confidence of attracting one of the British holiday carriers with flights into the Caribbean.
