BREAKING NEWS is the announcement (very late on Friday ” in fact after
the final editions of most Nationals ” which shows where Transport
lies as far as Government is concerned) of Douglas Alexander MP as
Secretary of State for Transport and Secretary of State for Scotland,
and Gillian Merron as the new Parliamentary Under Secretary of State.
The articulate Mr Alexander as been an effective Minister for Europe
and must be considered as a safe pair of hands with an eye on the
highest possible position for the future. Alistair Darling, the
present incumbent moves to Trade and Industry. The minister since
2002, something of a record for transport, he has proven to be an
outstanding holder of the post, knowledgeable and sympathetic where
possible, with Heathrow T5 as his major legacy. Mr Alexander has a
hard act to follow.
