A new survey of UK business travellers by consultants Accenture has found that a third expect to travel more in the next six months.
Most (44%) said they would travel about the same and only 11% said they would travel less.
Most (67%) said their destination would be in the UK but 46% said they would be going to continental Europe and 37% to other international destinations.
Some of the most surprising results were in the use of the internet. For air travel, 79% said they used the web for research into schedules, 66% for actually booking, 28% for changing a booking and 22% for checking-in.
For hotels, 70% used the web for research, 63% for booking and 23% to alter or update a reservation.
46% said they had used a self service kiosk at an airport to check in with 72% of those citing its convenience as the reason why. Those who did not use it cited preference for checking in through an agent or because the airport they most used had no kiosks.
More than half of the business travellers (55%) used traditional airlines and 35% chose low cost carriers. Just under half (45%) said they expected their use of low cost carriers to stay the same while 18% expected to use them more and only 4% less. But 24% said they never used them for business.
Price was by far the main reason (72%) that travellers chose low cost carriers.
On hotels, more than half of business travellers (54%) stayed in mid-range properties (Hilton, Hyatt, Marriott) and 28% in budget hotels while just 5% enjoyed luxury boutiques or luxury chain accommodation. 8% stayed in B&Bs.
But the survey found that hotels have a way to go in dealing with their frequent customers. Only 9% said they were recognised and got customised treatment. A large number (57%) said their hotel did not recognise them as a regular while 13% said they were recognised by name only. The remaining 22% said they were partly acknowledged as a regular.
* The online survey was questioned 451 business travellers representing companies with turnover ranging from £1bn (24%) to under £250m (53%).
