Great Western Railway has decided to reset more than 1 million customer accounts after it discovered that hackers had gained access to a percentage of them.
GWR said only around 1,000 customer accounts were accessed, according to the BBC, and no bank information had been exposed as it was protected by encryption.
A spokesman told the BBC that it had identified “unauthorised attempts to access a small number of GWR.com accounts over the past week”. They added that the activity was spotted and shut down quickly, but some of the attempts successfully gained access to the accounts.
The firm made the decision to reset the passwords of more than a million accounts, sending an automated message prompting users to enter a new password.
