The Australian government has instituted
"increased security measures" for flights from Doha, Abu Dhabi and
Dubai but is not imposing a ban on onboard electronic devices, as the U.S. and
U.K. have done, according to Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren
Chester. Those measures include explosives-detection screening for randomly
selected passengers and their luggage, as well as "targeted screening of
electronic devices" at the gate, according to Chester. The measures are
precautionary, he added, as there has been no specific threat to Australia and
all affected airlines—Emirates, Etihad, Qantas and Qatar—already have
gate-screening measures for Australia-bound flights to enforce liquid
restrictions.
