Global airline capacity this week is up 7 per cent week over
week with slightly fewer than 40 million seats scheduled – about 75 million
fewer than this time last year, according to OAG.
Capacity is up in all but one of the top ten regional
markets this week. Carriers in Western Europe have added about a million seats,
up 30.6 per cent week over week, and capacity in the UK was up 88 per cent week
over week as Easyjet resumed domestic services. Capacity in the region remains
78.7 per cent below its level prior to the Covid-19 crisis.
Northeastern Asia carriers have added more than 800,000
seats this week, and the region's capacity is now only 34 per cent of its
levels in mid-January, OAG reported.
Southeast Asia was the only region to decrease capacity this
week, down 5.9 per cent. That largely stemmed from capacity cuts by Indonesian
carriers Lion Air and Batik Air, though that was offset somewhat by services
reopening in the Philippines, according to OAG.
