NIGERIA media is reporting the appointment of Virgin Group as the new strategic investor and technical partner in a reconstituted Nigerian airline. Following the weekly council of ministers in the capital Abuja last Wednesday aviation minister Musa Yuguda said that the new carrier would be known as Virgin Nigeria Airlines Richard Branson expected to take a 49%, the balance held by Nigerian institutional investors and the general public. Following a ban on flights to the USA Nigerian Airways was liquidated in May 2003 with massive debts. Both Virgin Atlantic and British Airways fly to Lagos. British Airways also flies to Abuja whilst Virgin has services to the oil centre of Port Harcourt. Virgin Atlantic”s Crawley head office was unable to confirm or deny the story.
