GHANA AIRWAYS has been banned from operating to and from the USA. The decision to suspend the airline and the circumstances that led to it are very rare, possibly unprecedented, said Robert Johnson, a Transportation Department spokesman. "We're making a decision that we believe is the first of its kind." In two instances, Ghana Airways had used an aircraft that had been grounded by the Federal Aviation Administration because of safety concerns, the department said. The airline had also allowed its operating licence to expire earlier this month but continued unauthorised direct flights said the agency. "Ghana Airways' recent actions have raised serious questions regarding safety and licensing, which must be answered before the airline will be allowed to resume service to and from the United States," the Department announcement said. In a further move the authorities have banned the airline from selling tickets in the US. According to OAG the airline currently offers a four times per week two class non-stop service from Heathrow T3 to Accra using McDonnell Douglas DC10 aircraft but Ghana Airways website seems to have been ”borrowed” and the published phone number failed to elucidate any information. British Airways offers a daily non-stop service to Accra with a Boeing 767.
