US Airways has confirmed that it plans to fly to three new European cities from Philadelphia this summer ” Athens, Brussels and Zurich. The airline, acquired by American West last year after significant financial problems, has in recent times been expanding its profitable international services from Philadelphia, its second-largest hub after Charlotte. When the new services begin in May, US Airways will have 22 flights to 19 European cities from Philadelphia. It also operates to Gatwick and Frankfurt from Charlotte/Douglas.
US Airways has wanted to expand from Philadelphia, but has struggled to get additional gates, a problem now resolved. The airline will fly wide-body Boeing 767s to Athens (Greece) and Zurich (Switzerland). It will use a single-aisle Boeing 757 to Brussels (Belgium). The Athens flight will only be flown in the summer. The other two cities will operate year-round. All flights are subject to foreign government approval.
