THOMSONFLY, part of the German TUI leisure group, has taken off from West Midlands (Coventry) International Airport on schedule as promised with five destinations served on the first day. Somewhat late in the day Warwickshire County Council has applied to the High Court for the services to be stopped but the operator is adamant that the ground arrangements for the flights comply with the planning rules and CAA regulations. The small local (and not so local) protest groups have been at their most vociferous, backed by vote seeking politicians, some protected by Parliamentary privilege and coming out with utterances criticised for being ridiculous. In the meantime bookings continue to come in and Coventry City Council is thought to be likely to offer a vote of confidence in the airport next week.
