VIRGIN AMERICA is now expected to be launched in 2006 although (Sir) Richard Branson is more reticent than usual in discussing the new airline saying that the regularity process in the United States is slowing things down. Back in June 2004 recently appointed chief executive Fred Reid announced a deal for 18 new Airbus aircraft,11 A319s and seven A320s with 15 additional new A320s being leased from GE Capital Aviation Services (GECAS). The agreement with Airbus also contains options for up to 72 additional aircraft with deposits paid according to Sir Richard. One great advantage that Virgin America has even over such successful startups such as Jet Blue - the Virgin brand is well known in the USA as is the name of its chief protagonist.
