ARIANA AFGHAN AIRLINES could soon enter foreign hands as a number of international partners look closely at the anticipated privatisation of the Kabul-based national airline. The carrier has slowly resurrected its operations having been donated a number of aircraft from foreign parties and has played an important role in supporting the regeneration of the war-ravaged country. However, the airline has run into a number of technical problems and is in need of a significant cash injection to further upgrade its operations and maintain essential foreign links from Kabul to countries in the Gulf, Middle East and Europe. Under a previously agreed contract the US government has agreed to support the development of the airline and privatisation is seen as the key option in fulfilling this promise. Afghanistan”s President Hamid Karzai is calling for a decision to be made sooner rather than later in order to speed up the reconstruction of the country.
