RUSSIA is pressing ahead with a major civil aircraft programme called the Russian Regional Jet (RRJ). The much talked about project, led by the former military plane maker Sukhoi, has been kick started with an order for 50 aircraft from the fast growing Sibir Airlines and another 27 from smaller Russian carriers. Sukhoi partners in the project include Boeing, and Russian aerospace companies Ilyushin and Yakovlev. Sibir is the country's largest domestic airline, carrying around 4m passengers last year.
