CARLISLE AIRPORT, now owned by the haulage giant Eddie Stobart, could become an integrated transport hub if statements to the local media come to fruition.
The former RAF Crosby-on-Eden, located just six miles to the east of the M6, would require work to the existing 1,800m runway, which badly needs upgrading, or the development of a second
parallel strip.
Stobart Air is the current favourite name for an embryo freight airline. With the nearest scheduled operations at Prestwick, 100 miles to the north and Newcastle 50 tortuous miles to
the east, there is scope for passenger services, although the area is not over populated. Luton or Stansted would be favourites for a London flight, a wish come true for many in Cumbria.
