SWISS, the former Swissair/Crossair, is still struggling to come to terms with its rejuvenation and has posted a loss of ”250m in the first nine months of its financial year, well down on 2001 when the loss figure was just ”20m. In an effort to reduce costs the airline is to dispose of a single McDonnell Douglas MD11, a single Airbus A320 and three Saab 2000. The introduction of the Embraer 170 has in any event been delayed. The carriers leisure arm will replace seven MD 82/83 with four Airbus A320. The airline is to re-organise its flight deck and cabin crew rostering in order to reduce aircrew numbers. The approval of anti-trust immunity for a tie up with American Airlines by the US authorities should bring real benefits in the future.
