SOUTH WEST: Sutton Harbour Plc, the Plymouth based property development company that purchased Plymouth City Airport from British Airways on a very long lease, is proposing to build a new airport for the south west on a site adjoining the A38 Plymouth ” Exeter dual carriage. The new airport would mean the closure of the existing operations at Exeter and Plymouth Airports. According to Sutton Harbour the new airport could generate almost ”400m a year for the local economy, create more than 11,000 jobs and attract 3.5m passengers a year. By comparison Southampton Airport, a regional airport with some of the best surface transport interface, has yet to total one million passengers in a single year. Plymouth Airport, largely built by Brymon Airways in the 1980s, has suffered in recent years from lack of investment.
