STANSTED AIRPORT now has a link to the west for the first time since Continental pulled out of their short-lived Newark operation after 9/11. Zoom, the Canadian carrier is to introduce weekly flights to Vancouver from 15 May. The weekly scheduled service from Stansted is in addition to Gatwick and Glasgow departures to six destinations in Canada this summer. (With Stansted now a 20m hub airport it is surprising that another carrier has not come in with North Atlantic scheduled services. Maybe next year). Also new with the start of the summer season is a daily service to the Swiss city of Basle by easyJet, Air Polonia adding Gdansk, their fourth new Polish route in four months, and Dutch carrier Basiq Air switching their Amsterdam service over to Rotterdam. Norwegian has introduced new flights to the city of Bergen, the gateway to the fjords, and the medieval city of Stavanger, home to the largest area of old wooden houses in Europe, joining the airline”s current service to Oslo (see photo left). With these new routes, Stansted now offers 117 scheduled destinations. This is on top of over 30 holiday destinations available with tour operators and charter airlines.
