Flights were disrupted at Stansted airport on Sunday (August 13) evening while emergency repairs had to be carried out to its runway.
The Essex airport had to close the runway between 17.30 and 18.310 on Sunday after there were reports of a “hole” opening up on the landing surface.
The emergency repairs meant that 11 inbound flights had to be diverted to other airports including Luton and East Midlands, while other services suffered delays and cancellations.
Stansted said the runway had to be closed for 40 minutes to allow for “minor repairs” and that services had returned to normal later on Sunday evening.
“This temporary measure was deemed necessary for safety reasons and we would like to advise that the runway is now open,” said the airport in a statement.
