STANSTED AIRPORT, once labelled ”an airport in the middle of nowhere” by a then youthful London City, and officially titled London Stansted (and 37 miles from Whitehall), has come in for severe criticism from two important industry bodies with regard to the Government”s imminent white paper ”The Future Development of Air Transport in the UK" (see ABTN 24 November). ”There must be no cross subsidy if a second runway goes ahead,” says BAR UK, the airline industry representative body, whilst the Guild of Business Travel Agents (GBTA) uses much stronger language ”By proposing to site the new runway at Stansted this government is endangering Heathrow”s position as the world”s premier international airport and, more critically, jeopardising the UK”s centuries-old status as a major trading nation”.
