JAPAN AIRLINES is facing the kind of difficulties more associated with a banana republic then one of the world”s most important airlines. With huge losses over the last 12 months chief executive and president Toshiyuki Shinmachi is facing what amounts a "coup d'”tat" from within the ranks. Along with Katsuo Haneda, vice-president, and Hidekazu Nishizuka, a senior managing director, he has been asked to resign by senior management staff led by four executive directors. Mr Shinmachi has only been in place for a year following the toppling of the previous CEO over alleged safety problems. The JAL press office made no comment but the Osaka”s Daily Yomiuri yesterday reported further management strife. On a brighter note the airline is making progress to becoming a full member of Oneworld.
