Southend airport has announced plans to extend its terminal building, with an application made to Rochford District Council for permission to commence building works.
The airport says the multi-million pound project focuses on two elements, namely an extension to both the north and south ends of the building. The southern expansion will make room for a new baggage sorting and screening area, including new technology designed to help Southend meet new European Hold Baggage Security Screen Standards that come into effect on September 1 2018.
Meanwhile, the north end of the building is intended to house improved baggage reclaim facilities. Southend says the existing arrivals baggage area will be replaced with a more spacious one.
If planning permission is granted, the airport intends to start construction in early 2018.
